Corona had taken over the world and was spreading in India, in the 3rd week of April when i got a call from Sharbati & her husband Bhagwan Das, an elderly couple from Kathputli slum who have been relocated to Anand Parvat along with thousands of others who lost their houses during the demolition of the WORLD BIGGEST STREET ARTIST COMMUNITY.
Sharbati informed me that they have been trying to survive all this while it was over a month that lockdown started and she said its been a week that children have to sleep hungry, listening to her story broke my heart. People in the slum were scared for the lives of their children, not because of corona but because of hunger !!
These families of artists were already suffering and leading a life full of struggles, the lock down made it even worst, they were not even getting job of a labourer, no daily wage, no money & no food. While almost all of us were enjoying good food, i saw instagram flooded with pictures of food cooked by my friends every now and then, famcy dishes, seemed like everyone had become a chef but unfortunately between us there were thousands of people who were sleeping hungry everyday !
I was in a state of panic, I din’t know how and what to do the first person who came like an angel was Manika who sent kits for 20 families and guided me how to function during the lockdown in a safe way, since then we have been sending dry ration for over 700 families, for over 2 months now sending cooked meals every day for over 500 families, its a task but happens like magic.
Our little army was joined by Priya, Mohan ,Sonali ,Kirpal Pandit, Jaya ,Mohan, Babbar who helped us to feed more and more people and we were able to feed half the slum. Its been months and with the grace of the almighty they dint have to sleep empty stomach even a single.
I dont know if we can ever understand the feeling of being in their position but what we could do is to lend a hand, we are doing our bit & will continue to do the same. I feel blessed that we are in a position to help. #gratitude
